Before they are 12 months old, all heifer calves need to get vaccinated for Bangs Disease, also known as brucellosis. The disease causes females to abort their unborn calves and can be so devastating it is regulated by the government.
A vet must do the vaccines (second photo). To assure things are done properly and tracked, the treated animals get a tattoo and small metal ear tag in the right ear. You can see the small, orange metal tag pointed at by the arrow below.
We kept back 10 heifer calves and they are now all vaccinated and ready for healthy lives as cows. We'll see how they grow and develop through the spring and take a last look if we need to cull any.
Lorin and I have been around agriculture our whole lives. We're happy to be part of the family farm.
