The last couple weekends we have been preparing for the bees to arrive. They will be here in a couple of weeks and we have everything as prepared as we can for them to be here. We changed the location to one out by our hayfield that is near the house. That way we can have them fairly close by but not too near the house. They also will have a lot of close food supply this way and water is not too far away either.
We had to start by making sure the ground was level since there was some decent slope to the ground. After that we set up some risers so the hives will be up off the ground. We do this so that predators can't raid the hive as easy. Skunks and racoons will get stung more if they have to sit up to reach and they are more likely to be driven off and not cause trouble with the hive. Now we have set up hives and all we need are the bees!
Lorin and I have been around agriculture our whole lives. We're happy to be part of the family farm.
